BSc (Hons) Environmental Science and Engineering

Our Environmental Science and Engineering degree is for students who want to understand the science of environmental systems. It will help you develop the practical skills to tackle environmental problems.

Our degree in Environmental Engineering is an integrated study of the challenges facing environments, both natural and man-made, and how these challenges may be met.

The course combines chemistry, mathematics and physics, with some biological content, to give you the skills to investigate subjects including climate change, sustainability, air and water pollution and natural hazards.

Starting with subjects such as hydrology, geology and atmosphere, you will progress to more specific areas like soil science and aquatic biogeochemistry. In your final year you will complete a research dissertation, as well as studying in-depth modules such as global climate change and solid waste pollution engineering.

You will receive BSc (Hons) Environmental Science and Engineering from Lancaster University and BEng Environmental Engineering from Beijing Jiaotong University after you successfully complete this programme.

Why choose this course?

  • This course covers the training and skills you need for professional employment or postgraduate research in the environmental sector

Course Structure

You will learn through a combination of lectures, fieldwork and practical sessions. There will also be coursework exercises, tutorial discussions and reading from a range of literature sources, including research papers.

Undergraduate programmes at LUC-BJTU have a first year designed to help improve your level of English and to give you the study skills you will need to complete your degree. You will also learn some Chinese language with some cultural modules.

Your second year will give you a foundation in environmental science including Earth’s structure, the behaviour atmosphere, water flow in environmental systems, microbiology and environmental chemistry.

Your third year will build on this with advanced hydrology and water chemistry, soil science and environmental monitoring. There will be practical engineering modules on mitigation approaches to urban air pollution and water quality.

In your final year you will conduct a substantial independent research project. The engineering challenges associated with solid waste disposal form a major part of year four, and you will also study hazards from geological events and global scale environmental change.

International students: during the first year of each programme, some of the modules studied will vary from those listed here. The modules are developed especially for international students to enhance your time studying with Lancaster University College, Beijing Jiaotong University. You will also learn some Chinese language with some cultural modules.
